Having known her since we were three, starting on January 1st, 2023, for veganuary, my bff has finally taken the last step to be a food vegan. I have been a vegan for almost 11 years, and have worked on her slowly. It was never a yelling, combative, confrontational portion of our relationship, we respect each other too much, and we’re like sisters. I may have said it before but we were born mere days apart in the same hospital. We were destined to be lifelong friends. Especially since our parents lived almost next door to each other and worked together. LOL.
She had weaned off most things including eggs, milk and cheese, but there were four huge food obstacles I hadn’t convinced her to give up yet.
- Steaks
- Burgers
- Ribs
- Wings
Yes I had even gotten her to give up bacon! Even for the holidays she had my vegan turkey roast on Thanksgiving. Alas, she still devoured prime rib on Christmas like a Tyrannosaurus LOL.
On New Years Eve, while we were watching a movie and waiting for the new year, (We didn’t make it, we fell asleep before 11:00 pm. Like the wild party college animals that we are. LOL) She told me she would give them up for Veganuary, and as her resolution, keep it going from then on. I made no concession resolutions LOL.
Now I say food vegan because she is not ready to toss out all her clothing products that have leather nor stop buying them yet. I will take the battle though and continue to fight the war.
I think the turning point for her was, not love for me lol, but seeing now that it is being tracked more, the affects of farming animals on the environment. The amount of water, grain, forest used and pounds of CO2 used to feed us animal products is huge.
Since I went vegan, I have saved:
You can click on the image to go to the calculator site to see, if you are vegan, how much you have saved since you went vegan. Now she can track herself, to see what an impact she is making by giving up the last few animal products in her diet. This does not count animals used in other things, just eaten.
Anyway, I call this a win for veganism. I hope at least, you and your friends and family might consider joining in on Veganuary, and maybe seeing what an impact you make with just one month. I won’t post it here, you have to go look yourself. While you are there, maybe watching one of the excelent documentaries.
